      This a really good question and I think there is lots of room for new discoveries here. The studies of the state of things, (solid/liquid/gaseous) are called material science and physical chemistry. We know in general what the elements do in these states, but when the elements combine into chemical compounds, there can be infinite possibilities and there are loads of liquids, solids and gases to explore in the infinite chemical space. This is why chemistry is so exciting.
