There are many animals that don’t have any bones at all – a total of approximately 1.3 million different species!

The animals that do have bones are called vertebrates, and animals without bones are called invertebrates. Examples of invertebrates include starfish, slugs, octopuses and insects.

This divergence of animals with, and animals without bones happened around 600 million years ago in evolutionary time.
