Hey Maddison – great question and it’s always been something I’ve struggled to understand, even when I learned about it at university!

To keep it simple, the eye senses light when it switches on certain types of cell. There are different types of cell in the eye that can sense different colours of light, how bright the light is etc. These cells then signal this information using electrical energy to the brain. What the brain then does is make sense of all of this electrical information, by breaking it all down. It then converts this message into meaningful information that allows us to ‘see’.
