This is a brilliant question, and I really could go on all day long about it!

Every living thing on this planet has come to be because of a process called evolution. This means that things very slowly change over long periods of time to adapt to their environments and become ‘good at being alive’. Humans have been evolving for millions of years on Earth, alongside all the other animals, plants, bacteria, fungi and viruses!

This means that all life on earth can be traced back to one common ancestor, from which we evolved. Our most recent ancestors are the apes (like chimpanzees and orangutang), and we evolved from then a few million years ago, which is not that long at all really! This is how humans came to be.
