Animals evolved from simple, single-celled life over billions of years (1 billion = 1,000,000,000). Scientists are still working out how multicellular life (including animals) came from single-celled life. There are a lot of theories, which are hard to prove as there is very little evidence (fossils) of all of the species that came before the animals we know of today!
